Hewlett-Packard European Laboratories (HPLB)The Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) is a leading global manufacturer of computing, Internet and Intranet solutions, services, communications products and measurement solutions, all of which are recognised for excellence in quality and support. HP has been operating in Europe since 1959 with the opening of its first manufacturing facility outside Palo Alto, California, at Boeblingen near Stuttgart, Germany. From the outset, HP aimed to be a European citizen and have a balanced presence. The company has deliberately sought to grow, not only by relying on its marketing, but by actively investing in European manufacturing and R&D operations. For fiscal year 1997, HP reported a European turnover of nearly 15 billion euros, 33% of world-wide sales. After 40 years in Europe, HP employs close to 25,000 people in fields ranging from R&D, manufacturing, sales and support. HP has substantial manufacturing operations in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom: altogether 18 manufacturing operations in 10 sites. They are worldwide centres for

HPLB research in quantum information processing and communication (QIPC) is carried out in the Quantum Information Processing (QIP) Group by Drs. A. P. A. Kent, W. Munro and T. P. Spiller and in BRIMS by Dr. Sandu Popescu. Theoretical interests in QIPC are widespread:
Established collaborative links exist with many other research groups worldwide. In the UK, HP is a member node of the Quantum Circuits Network and the Quantum Computing Network. Relevant EC project involvement of HPLB:
Dr. Timothy SpillerDr. T. P. Spiller holds a BA in Physics (First Class Honours, Oxford 1980) and a PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics (Durham, 1984). From 1984 to 1995 he held personal Research Fellowships at the University of Sussex (1984-6 SERC, 1986 onwards Royal Society). He has researched and published extensively in many areas of theoretical physics:
Tim Spiller joined HP Research Laboratories in Bristol in 1995 and is currently aPrincipal Research Scientist in the Quantum Information Processing (QIP) Group. His current long-term research area is QIPC, with specific interest in condensed state realizations of quantum computing hardware. |
