Project Objectives
Objective No. 1: Identifiable Qubits
Magnetic systems of nanometer dimensions must have two necessary ingredients to be considered as good candidates for quantum bits:
- A relatively large total spin. For instance, very small antiferromagnetic particles have a spin of a few hundred in units of Planck’s constant. Such spins are easier to prepare and measure compared to fundamental spins.
- A high magnetic anisotropy. The two levels inside the potential well of the anisotropy barrier may be separated by an energy gap of a few Kelvin, as in the case of magnetic clusters.
We propose to investigate new magnetic systems which satisfy these two conditions. We expect that this work will improve the research level of materials preparation in Europe, both for magnetic clusters and nanometric particles.
