Project Objectives

Objective No. 3: Decoherence

QC systems need to maintain coherence.

The benchmark is that the loss in fidelity has to be small during an elementary one- or two-qubit operation.

Our aim is to investigate and quantify magnetic qubit behaviour (both theoretically and experimentally) against this benchmark and through the use of tomography for density operator reconstruction (enabling quantification of the entropy).

In the collaboration we have the expertise to modify and control magnetic decoherence phenomena by changing the chemical composition and purity of samples.

We also have the techniques, both experimental (such as resonance absorption in a broad spectrum of frequencies) and theoretical to determine a better understanding of the nature of decoherence associated to the interaction between the qubits and their physical environment.

Decoherence phenomena are expected to depend strongly on several factors:

  • The existence of nuclear spins.
  • The organisation of the qubits.
  • The interactions of the qubits with the substrate.

We will investigate these effects in detail.
