Project Objectives

Objective No. 2: State Preparation

The quantum degeneracy of the two lowest spin states in the two potential wells separated by the anisotropy barrier may be lifted by applying a magnetic field parallel to the easy axis of anisotropy. Consequently, the system can be prepared in a chosen spin state.

Moreover, in the absence of external magnetic fields, the spin tunneling between the two degenerate states gives rise to two new spin levels, and the energy gap between them may be controlled externally.

One of the main purposes of this work is therefore to demonstrate control over the tunneling probability between degenerate spin states.

The aim is to fully determine the terms in the spin Hamiltonian through quantitative comparison between theory and experimental data for the tunneling rate.

Some of this work can be performed with qubit ensembles, in parallel with the development of individual qubit measurement techniques.
